OUR MISSION
To provide the most competitive events possible while still maintaining the camaraderie that epitomizes the game.
OUR HISTORY
According to the best information available, the Richmond Golf Association was founded in 1922 by members of the Country Club of Virginia, Hermitage Country Club, and Jefferson Lakeside Club. Its primary mission has been to provide central Virginia golfers with opportunities to play competitive golf in both a structured and pleasant environment.
The RGA started out with one championship and has since expanded its calendar so that today the organization conducts nine championships and events per year. In addition to its primary mission of conducting competitive championships, the organization promotes camaraderie and fellowship among players who are members of RGA clubs. The RGA counts among its rolls over 35 member clubs in the public, private, semi-private, or resort categories, and is comprised of thousands of golfers in central Virginia.
The organization’s hallmark event is the Richmond Golf Association Amateur Championship, often referred to among Richmonders as the City Amateur, which dates back to the RGA’s founding that now spans more than nine decades. The championship counts among its winners some of the finest names in Virginia golf. The list of past champions includes Lanny Wadkins, a three-time winner of the City Amateur, who is also part of the World Golf and Virginia Golf halls of fame. His younger brother, Bobby Wadkins, and Robert Wrenn, both former PGA Tour members, also won City Amateur championships. Lifetime amateur Nelson Broach claimed the City Amateur on a record 11 occasions, his victories coming in four different decades (1947-74). The event has such a rich history that it was interrupted for three years from 1943-45 during World War II.
Past winners of the City Amateur notwithstanding, other events conducted by the RGA have been claimed by prominent players with state and national reputations. Virginia amateur legend Vinny Giles, a record seven-time State Amateur champion, and four-time State Open victor Jay Woodson, among other notable figures, have captured RGA events.
Today, the RGA offers golfers a full range of services, including playing opportunities in a tournament setting, golf at some of the finest clubs in the commonwealth (with a membership), online registration for events, a player of the year rankings’ system, a governance structure through its board of directors, as well as a revamped website offering the latest RGA news and much more.
Further, end-of-season RGA player of the year recipients take pride in an RGA tradition in taking possession of the crystal-enhanced trophy, which resides at their member club for a year until the next postseason award winner is crowned.
At its very core, the RGA takes pride in each golfer’s backing of the organization and its events, as well as an unwavering dedication to supporting fellow Richmond-area golfers and its clubs.
